7-Day Ladakh Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Seven days is enough to experience some of Ladakh's highlights, but only if you resist the temptation to rush.

A common mistake is trying to drive to Nubra Valley or Pangong Lake immediately after flying into Leh. Ladakh's altitude makes a slower beginning much safer and more enjoyable.

This itinerary gives you two nights in Leh before traveling higher, followed by Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake.

Day 1: Arrive in Leh โ€” Rest and Acclimatize

Fly into Leh and make your first day deliberately easy.

Transfer to your hotel or guesthouse, eat a light meal, drink water regularly, and rest. If you feel comfortable later in the day, take a short, easy walk near your accommodation.

Avoid strenuous exercise and do not plan a high mountain pass excursion on your arrival day.

Overnight: Leh

Day 2: Easy Leh Sightseeing

Continue acclimatizing while exploring nearby attractions at a relaxed pace.

Depending on how you feel, visit Leh Market, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, or nearby cultural attractions. Do not turn the day into a race between sightseeing stops.

If you experience significant symptoms of altitude illness, do not continue higher simply because your itinerary says you should.

Overnight: Leh

Day 3: Leh to Nubra Valley

After completing your initial acclimatization period, travel north toward Nubra Valley.

The traditional route crosses the Ladakh Range through the Khardung La area before descending toward the Shyok and Nubra valleys.

Continue toward Diskit and Hunder. At Diskit, visit the monastery area and the large Maitreya Buddha overlooking the valley. Around Hunder, you will encounter Ladakh's well-known sand dunes and Bactrian, or double-humped, camels.

Overnight: Nubra Valley

Day 4: Explore Nubra Valley

Do not immediately leave Nubra after one night. Use your second day to experience the valley at a slower pace.

You can explore Diskit and Hunder more thoroughly or visit additional villages depending on current road and access conditions.

Nubra is much more than a photo stop. Staying longer gives you time to experience its villages, monasteries, local food, and distinctive landscape.

Overnight: Nubra Valley

Day 5: Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake

Travel from Nubra toward Pangong Lake. The exact route can depend on road conditions and current local regulations, so confirm the route locally before departure.

Pangong Tso lies above 14,000 feet and stretches across a vast high-altitude landscape. Its colors appear to change with the light, clouds, and time of day.

Spend the evening quietly. At this elevation, even travelers who felt comfortable in Leh and Nubra may notice the altitude.

Overnight: Pangong area

Day 6: Pangong Lake to Leh

Wake early if you want to experience the lake before the main daytime activity begins.

After breakfast, return toward Leh. Do not treat the return journey simply as transportation. Ladakh's roads pass through extraordinary high-altitude landscapes.

Once back in Leh, enjoy a comfortable dinner and a relaxed evening.

Overnight: Leh

Day 7: Departure

Transfer to Leh airport for your onward flight.

If your flight leaves later in the day, keep the morning relaxed rather than squeezing in another long excursion.

Is Seven Days Enough for Ladakh?

Yes. Seven days provides a good first introduction to Leh, Nubra Valley, and Pangong Lake while still allowing essential acclimatization time.

What it does not provide is enough time to responsibly add every major destination.

Trying to squeeze Tso Moriri, Lamayuru, Nubra, and Pangong into the same short trip can turn a Ladakh vacation into a sequence of long drives.

If you have nine or ten days, the trip becomes significantly more relaxed.

Important Travel Advice

  • Allow at least 48 hours for acclimatization after arriving in Leh.
  • Check current road conditions before long-distance drives.
  • Confirm permit requirements for your destinations.
  • Carry warm layers even during summer.
  • Do not ignore symptoms of altitude illness.
  • Stay on established roads and respect environmentally sensitive areas.
